Applicant: Children Welfare Institute of Xiangfan City
Profile of applicant: Xiangfan CWI was founded in 1982. It stands by the river of Hanjiang. It is the only welfare institution in the city to take in orphans or abandoned children, and provide them medical care, education, rehabilitation. It covers an area over 9000 square meters and is constituted by nursery room for infants, amusement room, dormitory for orphans, classroom for special education, rehabilitation room, clinic. 68 staff are working on the adoption of orphans and abandoned children, foster care, medical care and training and rehabilitation and over 80% of them possess an associate degree. The orphans and abandoned children in the orphanage are around 150. Since 1992, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and UN Children Foundation appointed the Xiangfan CWI as one of the executive units for National Community Children Rehabilitation Program, it has been providing service to the society including foster care, special education for mute and deaf children, and also being an orthopedic workshop for the children from the community. Motto of the orphanage is Children are all and all are for Children.
Background of the project: the washing and drying equipment that the orphanage is using have aged. They are out of order frequently. And because limited to their space, and has no indoor drying place, they could not dry the clothes when the machines are not working well, which is badly affecting children’s lives, especially when the whether is bad.
In 2007, Xiangfan CWI was included into the Blue Sky Program initiated by Ministry of Civil Affairs, and its scale has been expanding. There is going to be more children being accepted by the CWI and the situation of malfunction of washing equipments is going to get worse.
Because over 98% of the children are special need or suffering from all kinds of physical problems so they are very vulnerable to disease. To prevent cross infection, the orphanage are rearranging the laundry procedure. They are washing the children underwear, outer clothing, diaper (it is not disposable, because they are expensive) separately. And clothes from children who are sick will be disinfected alone. To replace the old machines, the orphanage needs 3 big washing machines, 1 big drainer, and 1 big drying machine. By then, the laundry situation will be improved.
